Robert L Avery, MD

Dr. Robert Avery received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and took his ophthalmology training there at Wilmer. He completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at Duke under Drs. Robert Machemer, Brooks McCuen, and Gene de Juan. He returned to Johns Hopkins as Assistant Chief of Service and later went on to found California Retina Consultants and California Retina Research Foundation.

Dr. Avery has been the principal investigator for dozens of national clinical trials at California Retinal Consultants and California Retina Research Foundation. He is the co-editor of Retina Today, and has published over 65 peer reviewed articles on retinal diseases, including pivotal ones pioneering the clinical use of anti-VEGF agents.

On a personal level, Dr. Avery enjoys traveling with his family, and his 4 children have been seen at many retina meetings. He races sailboats at the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, and enjoys sailing with his family.
